As we enter the landscape of inflation and potential resource scarcity, I’m challenged. How can we support each other and our own families?

My sister had a fun idea this holiday season. A book exchange! She was inspired by the Icelandic tradition called, Jolabokaflod. It is one of the most unique and charming Iceland Christmas traditions. Jolabokaflod translates into “Christmas Book Flood.” The tradition is to give or receive new books on Christmas Eve. It’s not just about the giving though—it’s also about the reading! We decided to jump on board and challenge the ways we give gifts this year. Now that I have an almost two year old, I really do believe this is a wonderful tradition to adopt and a great way to instill the love of reading!

When we remove material purchasing and consumption from the table, we are forced to question what we are bringing to the holiday instead—individually and collectively. Where do you really need to give your energy and recourses this holiday season? How do you celebrate life everyday? What spiritual gifts can you share with people every month? I ask myself these questions because my family does not celebrate Christmas in the traditional sense. This can be a challenging time of year for some, so l want to give the gift of presence. Let’s open hearts instead of packaged plastic and fake trinkets. If you are inspired by someone, tell them. If you are thankful for someone, show them in real ways.
